Update on Our Google Dance

You have to love it when a plan works!

If you read the previous post you'll know we experienced a version of the 'Google Dance' with one of our client websites - Dentist Bury St Edmunds.

The site was on page two or three. Not on page one but definitely in contention.

Then, suddenly, it wasn't. In fact, it wasn't even indexed by Google, which could have been alarming. But we remembered a phenomenon that we'd witnessed once or twice before, and which some people call the 'Google Dance', where a website can simply disappear from the listings, only to reappear just as suddenly and even in a higher position than before.

And guess what? Our dentist site has done just that. Reappeared as if from nowhere, only not on page two or three, but on page one, as we hoped it would.

Result!

Roy

PS. Meanwhile, a front page site I created for local Bury St Edmunds courier company, Must Go Couriers, is still firmly parked on page one, where we left it some months ago. But now it has a Youtube video and a link directly to Must Go's official website, so they can start to reap the benefits of Cinnamon Edge's online marketing expertise.

Seen a Bury St Edmunds Dentist Dance?

We recently created a new site for a client on a new domain, called Dentist Bury St Edmunds. The performance of the site in the SERPs (search engine results pages) reminded us of an enduring mystery...

One of the bigger puzzles in search engine optimisation is a phenomenon known as the 'Google dance'.

Sometimes a website will be indexed quite quickly by Google and might even appear on the first few pages, especially if it's been set up with SEO in mind.

With on-page SEO and some nice incoming links, a site can quickly be successful. But sometimes it will then simply disappear. The site is still there if you type in the URL, but it doesn't come up in the search results.

Then, just as suddenly, the website will reappear in the listings. It might be a few days or it may take longer, but when the site does come back it will often be in a higher position than previously.

This is what SEO experts call the Google dance, and it's what happened to our dentist site.

It looks like the most important thing, when a site disappears, is to continue link building, bookmarking and so on, as though everything was fine. This may be why, once Google decides to index the site again, it often appears higher in the SERPs (because it now has more links than it did before). It's also important to give the site the authority that steady link-building bestows on a website, because authority is a big thing with Google.

So the lesson is, if your new site disappears from site, don't panic. Carry on as if nothing was wrong, and chances are that very soon your website will be doing even better than it was before.

Here's the website we're talking about, for Dentist in Bury St Edmunds.

Online Marketing Tip Helps a Bury St Edmunds Business

A recent module of our online marketing course dealt with the issue of getting indexed by Google.

Google themselves say there's little point now in submitting your site for indexing and they'll get to your site eventually. That's true, but with millions of new sites being built every month, you could be waiting a while.

One local business owner couldn't find his site on Google and wondered what was wrong. When he typed the address into the address window his site came up, no problem. But when he typed it into the search window, Google came back with 'Page not found'.

One thing you can rely on Google to do is visit established and popular sites, like social media and bookmarking sites. When they visit, they tend to follow the links. So a good way to get Google to visit your site and index it is to create backlinks from some of these sites.

I posted a link to his site Bouches Bonanza on Digg. Within an hour, Google had indexed his site. The site's not well optimised and it's not likely to reach page one, but at least you can find it now.

Online Marketing for Dentist in Bury St Edmunds

Our latest client is a dentist in Bury St Edmunds, for whom we've created a temporary website (the sooner your domain is active, the more Google likes it), and two videos, both on YouTube.

This should ensure that our client will be taking over a high-ranking web domain that brings them lots of natural search traffic.

The new site is at http://www.dentistburystedmunds.co.uk/

Here's one of the videos:

Online Marketing on the Move in Bury St Edmunds

One of the deciding factors in any form of marketing is access to your potential customers. There's no point taking out ads in The Times if your target audience is aged under 21 or living outside The Times' distribution area.

Likewise, you might wonder: 'What's the point of putting your business online if half the town you're based in has no useful Internet connection for days at a time, as happened in Bury St Edmunds this week?'

But to dismiss online marketing in Bury St Edmunds because the broadband proved unreliable this week would be to forget the current 'big things' in Internet marketing - mobile broadband 'dongles' and hand-held Internet-ready devices like the Blackberry, the iPhone and the rest.

Increasingly, your customers will be searching for you on the move and it's important to make your website available to them however they want to access it. But websites need to be specially redesigned to work properly on portable devices.

And optimising your site for iPhones, smart phones and other portable Internet devices is something else we can help you with, needless to say!

Another 21st Century service from Cinnamon Edge.

Marketing Bury St Edmunds Solicitors Online

Our new website for Solicitors Bury St Edmunds has already made it on to page one of Google and today we tweaked it a little more, changing a page title here and adding new content there.

There are quite a few solicitors firms in Bury St Edmunds and most of them seem to be marketing online in one way or another, so we'll see how our brand new site does in the coming weeks.

There does seem to be an increasing interest in online marketing in Bury St Edmunds, so we can at least say the word is getting around!
